Drafts
Front Page
Here i have drawn four drafts of my magazine front page. these drafts have been drawn according to the responses i got from my questionnaire including all the conventions and colour schemes asked for. This is my first initial idea of how my final magazine front page may look like. i have scanned this draft and fully annotated it in colour.
Here are two drafts of my front page and these all contain the initial colour schemes and layout of how my final design may look like after its finished. these drafts where al created on photoshop and now what needs to be done is applying the initial font images and texts which will create the coverlines, puff, main coverline, mastehead, dateline, strapline and web adress. i really like the specific colour schemes that i have chosen and the layout of the drafts as they represent a few industry style magazines like XXL.
Front Page: Pictures
Here are a range of photos i have taken for my magazine front page. The photoshoot sessions i hade produced fantastic photos and i decided to choose the inddor photoshoot pictures as these pictures where much more professionally done and gave the pictures a richer and more cleaner quality than the outdoor photos. The outdoor photoshoot session was also fantastic but the photos did not come out as rich as i planned because of poor lighting and backgroud which does not give it an industry style look. Both of these photoshoots where directed and taken by me and eventhough i used the same camera, Lighting and background played a key role in helping me choose which pictures where better.
Front Page: Stages
My first template of my front cover i believe was much more better than the second template it had the desired colour scheme of the target audience and the masthead is placed in the middle as a industry style magazine will do so.
|
Secondly, i went on to develop my first template by adding a silhouette image of a person and trying to work with the coverlines making sure they fit in right with the desired colour scheme.
|
Here at this stage, after i fitted my coverlines i decided to place on of my desired images i wanted to use from my first outdoor photoshoot. This image didn't work with my coverlines and give the magazine a industry style look so, it had to be changed.
|
This is my second front page template which was less favourable to the first one. i decided to take a few elements; such as the layout from this to add to my magazine front page, mixing both layouts but picking the best options of where the conventions fit perfectly
|
At this stage, i decided to change the picture on the front cover to a much more richer and profesional photograph from my second photoshoot. I also incoperated the mixing of the layouts between two templates for the conventions and stuck to the dark colour scheme the target audience demanded.
|
Finally at this point i realised that this new colour scheme gave an uplift to my magazine and made it clear tjhat what my audience demanded for has been done. I further went on to change the font of the text to make it much simpler so it is very effective and connotes my chosen genre of afrobeats. I moved around the layout again in detail making sure my coverlines and text worked well with my image and pushed my magazine to proffesional standard.

contents page
This section is another drawn draft but these drafts are for my contents page. here i have drawn four initial ideas from my responses of how my contents page will look in my final magazine. these contents pages contain all the convention needed to creat a full contents page. this drawn draft have been scanned and annotated all in colour.
Contents page: Digital draft
Again, here are another two drafts of how my contents page may look like after the project is complete. these also contain all the intial colours and layout of how my final design should exactly be. they may be altered a little, but the majority of the the final product will contain the opinions of the target audiene.
Contents page: Pictures
These are a few photos that i had taken for my contents page i decided to vary the range of photos with previos photos i had taken in the past at event such as: videoshoots, and also use more of the outdoor photoshoot pictures as there needs to be a variety of pictures to connote diffrent styles of the afrobeats genre. I really like the group outdoor photos as they connote unity and togetherness which is key for most music groups and this works best for an afrobeats music. Furthermore, i also like the behind the scenes photos because this shows what musicians in the afrobeats genre get up to at thier video shoots but most of them had a quiet busy background which will drop the quality of the contents page so i decided to use the picture with the less busy background and that was the 3rd photo of Fuse ODG
Contents PAGE: STAGES
This is my first template of my magazine and i decided to go with this because it looks much more professional and had all the conventions of a contents page included in it. I used a brighter colour scheme at this stage because this was just a template so i could make changes later
|
At this point i went into more depth with my draft and included silhouette images and a few temporary fonts just to get a fell of how the magazine will look. I placed in my masthead and positioned it exactly how the magazine template showed at first.
|
Here i've developed my contents page into more depth and detail by adding some of my photos i took from my photoshoot sessions, Adding the actual contents in the magazine and changing the fonts of the text into more effective but simple text. I still kept the same red colour scheme as the template did but just changed part of it to add the black also.
|
At this point i have completed my contents page with all the necessary information needed but major changes where made here. I changed the whole colour scheme to display signs of continuty from my Front page.
I also downloaded a few fonts so that i could change my masthead and contents page title. This contents page is far from complete as i need to fit in my masthead properly, change image 6 into a difrent image, crop image 5 properly so the image does not look streched and then after update My subscription section wit my complete front page. |
Finally at this stage, i had to change my colour scheme again to show a level of coninuity in my work. I then changed some of my alignments and typoraphy to give it that full proffessional look.
I also changed image 6 to a better image as the previous image used was very similar to image 7 as they were wearing he same jumper. Also i repositioned my masthead so that the space at the top would'nt look to blank and vaige. Furthermore, this part of my contents is almost finished but just needs a subscription section which will go on the top left of the contents page |
Double page spread
Here I have drawn two drafts of my specific double page spread. these are based on the questionaire responses of the specific colour scheme they like, artist they will like to see and images they prefered. These were taken into most consideration when designing this drawn draft. These drafts contain all the conventions that can be used in a double page spread. These drawings have been scanned in colour and annotated in detail.
Double page spread: Digital Drafts
At this stage i have uploaded a screen shot of my double page spread drafts bieng done on photoshop. From this stage i will pick the best draft and continue to work on this draft to make it look closer and closer to my final product adding features such as: images, quotes, text and a headline. I like the second draft much more than the first one because it looks much more organised and follows the colour scheme thats fits perfectly with the audiences demand. So i decided to go further with this draft.
double page pread: Pictures
Here are 10 photos which have been picked from all 3 photoshoots. I picked the second photo for my double page spread because i believe this picturee is the strongest at communitcating to people and the guitar prop works well with the afrobeats connotation. I previously decided to use the photo behind the black background but this had to be changed because the double page spread needed to be totally diffrent from the front and contents page. I did not choose or use and of the photos from the first outdoor photoshoot as these pictures did not really connote the culture and lifestyle of my genre as the second picture did.
double PAGE sPREAD: sTAGES
This is my first template i decided to go further in depth with. this template is much more organised and neater than the first one and it contains all the conventions needed for a double page spread. I used this colour scheme as a base to see how my magazine will look but later on i changed this.
|
Here i went further by intorducing a few of my fonts and placing a silhouette image unto the double page spread. I fixed a permanent layout of the syle of my magazine and started to colour my main headline text.
|
At this point i have placed the first initial image i wanted to use as my double page spread image. I have typed up my article which is a interview with an artist and positioned it all in textual columns. i have also completed my stand first and drop capital in full with necessary pre information befor the interview.
The font for the quite did not really fit well with my double page spread and this made it loose its professional standard |
Finally, at this stage i placed in a google image and was able to change the font of the quote and the quote itself to give it a much better look. I changed the font of my masthead and and the total colour scheme of my double page spread but this was not as effective as i thought as it gave my double page spread a shalow look and this had to be changed.
|
Finally, at this point i have fully completed my double page spread
